Do you have someone in your life who is interested in sewing? Are you wanting to give sewing a try but are not sure what you need to begin? These are the top 10 things I would recommend to begin the wonderful adventure of learning to sew.

A Sewing Machine:
A basic sewing machine is all that you need. I have been able to do just about every project I have wanted with my basic Heavy Duty Singer machine. From sewing a basic pillowcase to sewing a small quilt together, this one does the trick.
Needles:
Get a few packages of needles that go with your sewing machine. There is nothing more aggravating to a new sewer than to break your needle and not have a spare. There are different types of needles to use depending on the thickness of your fabric, but a good all purpose needle is all they will need to start out.
Thread:
A basic white cotton thread is all you need to begin. It is also nice to get a pack of variety colored thread to match different fabrics and projects.
Good scissors:
A large pair of sheers are a necessity when cutting fabric and they should only be used for fabric. Label your fabric scissors to avoid using them for something else, it will make them dull very fast. A small pair of sharp pointed scissors for cutting small threads are also great to have on hand.
Cotton Fabric:
Don’t start someone off on their sewing journey with a stretchy fabric. A good basic cotton fabric is the way to go. Cut it into squares and have them start to practice sewing a straight stitch. Joannes is a great place to start shopping for fabric.
A seam ripper
A seam ripper is a small tool used to pick apart small stitches made by a sewing machine. A sharp seam ripper is a must. Novice and experienced sewers alike will use a seam ripper just about every time they sit down to sew. This little tool allows you to easily pick out those tiny stitches when you have made a mistake. Some people may try to use their sharp scissors but this can lead to cutting fabric and ruining a project.
Pins:
Glass head pins are used to hold two pieces of fabric together until you are able to sew them together. You want a set of pins that are sharp and can glide through fabric with ease. Sharp pins are actually safer because you are not having to force them through the fabric and risk catching your finger.
A basic pattern:
Check the internet for basic patterns. I would start with a pillowcase, tote bag, or bean bags. Check on Pinterest for EASY sewing projects.
Extra Bobbins:
Bobbins are used in a sewing machine to hold the bottom thread. When sewing it is great to have multiple bobbins for different colored threads.
Painters tape:
This may seem odd but some painters tape can be placed on the machine or the fabric to aid a new seamstress in sewing a straight line.
Sewing is a fantastic life skill and this is a great way to get started. Share your sewing projects with me on Facebook!
